Hans zimmer - inception (music from the motion picture) - Hans-Zimmer.com

For  Dunkirk ,  composer Hans Zimmer and filmmaker Christopher Nolan wanted an original score that was unlike any other for a World War II movie. As a maestro of synthesized themes going back to his days with the pop band  The Buggles  and his early scores such as  Rain Main  and  Driving Miss Daisy,  one might assume that’s an easy feat for Zimmer. However, as the Oscar-winning composer of  The Lion King  details in our interview, cracking a sonic world was something he had to continually go back to the drawing board for with  Dunkirk.  Zimmer talks about his long-running working relationship with Nolan, which has spanned such movies as  Interstellar, Inception,  and  The Dark Knight  trilogy ,  as well as his co-composing with Benjamin Wallfisch on Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi opus  Blade Runner 2049 .

The score received mostly positive reception. Regarding Zimmer's previous collaborations with Nolan, Archie Watt of MovieCues said "it's very obvious to anybody who has heard his previous scores for the director that this score is built firmly on their foundations. The compositions are very simple ones, but here the familiar elements of those previous scores are pulled off in a more energetic and complex way. That’s what puts this score a good distance ahead of them". Whilst praising several elements of the score, his review was largely negative, saying "Despite the fact that certain music on this album is inarguably good, the majority of it is rather dull and mundane".

The World War II epic Dunkirk arrives in theaters July 21 st . On July 13 th , Zimmer will embark on the second leg of his first North American tour , which kicked off in April at Coachella.
